Consistency is the single most defining characteristic of championship Pokémon TCG decks. A deck with an unstoppable Turn 3 combo is worthless if it bricked 3 out of 5 games. Here is how professional deck builders mathematically engineer consistency into their 60 cards.

1. The 8-Basic Rule

In competitive standard format, having at least 8 to 10 Basic Pokémon ensures your initial mulligan rate stays below 33%. Giving your opponent free mulligan draws gives them extra cards and immediate tempo. If your archetype naturally plays fewer Basics (like certain Evolution lines), you must compensate with heavy search items (Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Nest Ball, Ultra Ball).

2. Early Reach & Search Density

To evaluate a deck's consistency on Turn 1, calculate your total "Live Outs" for establishing your board. An 'Out' is any card that directly finds or fetches your key starters:

• Raw Starters: 4 Dreepy, 2 Duskull (6 targets)
• Direct Search: 4 Buddy-Buddy Poffin, 2 Nest Ball, 3 Ultra Ball (9 outs)
• Supporter Search: 4 Arven, 1 Irida (5 indirect outs)

With 20 total outs out of 60 cards, your probability of opening at least one way to establish your board on Turn 1 rises to over 93.4%!

3. Balancing Supporter vs. Item Draw

Because you can only play one Supporter card per turn, overloading your deck with 14+ Supporters leads to hand clogs. The optimal ratio in the modern standard format is:

• 8 to 11 Supporters: Split between draw/disruption (Iono, Research) and gusting/setup (Boss's Orders, Arven).
• 18 to 24 Items: Unrestricted play per turn allows chaining multiple searches in one turn.
• 6 to 10 Energy: Keep energy counts lean unless your deck relies on heavy natural attachment or manual discard engines.
